[Accepting the lit cigarette from the other boy, Kit stole a long and grateful drag from the filtered end. His anxiety didn't begin to ebb right away, but the promise of that bittersweet relief was enough. He inhaled deeply, held the ashen flavor of the cigarette in the back of his throat where at first it tingled and then it burned, and then he released his breath and sighed. A thick cloud of smoke spilled neatly into the air before him, a silver tsunami that danced violently before his eyes until he fanned it away with his free hand.
With the gesture, Kit's head swam momentarily, but it was a strangely pleasant sensation following all the ways he had been assaulted that night. To feel, even briefly, numb and far away from all that pain...it was something he could only be thankful for.
He could think of only one way to show his gratitude right that moment and, pulling the cigarette from in between his lips...
